Interested in Driving a School Bus?

With approximately 650 school buses on the road daily, Virginia Beach City Public Schools accepts applications throughout the year for bus drivers and bus assistants as well as substitute drivers and assistants.

Individuals who are interested must apply online and should select the “Substitute” application type when creating an account on the school division’s online application system.

Before applicants are considered for hiring, they need to complete both classroom and behind-the-wheel training organized by the Office of Transportation Services as well as earn a Virginia commercial driver’s license (CDL). Drivers, assistants and substitutes who are hired by the school division receive a stipend for their time in training.

Contracted bus drivers and assistants will receive a full-range of benefits including, but not limited to: health insurance, dental insurance, sick leave, personal reasons leave, life insurance, disability coverage, wellness program and flexible hours.

Individuals with questions about employment as a VBCPS bus driver, bus assistant or substitute should call 757-263-1545 (extension 1) or email cris.sprouse@vbschools.com.
