6. Student, Employee and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award

The School Board is pleased to recognize Red Mill Elementary School, one of only five schools in Virginia named a 2016 recipient of the Let’s Move Active Schools National Award. Representing the school this evening are:

  • Physical education teacher Ashlyn Parker;
  • Assistant Principal Courtney Boyce; and
  • Principal Dr. Michelle Miller.

The award is the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools. First Lady Michelle Obama launched the Let’s Move initiative in 2010 with the goal of ending childhood obesity. Today, more than 20,000 schools have signed up to be “Active Schools” with the commitment of providing students daily physical activity. At Red Mill Elementary, students have physical education classes in addition to recess; take daily movement breaks; can partake in before or after school activities; and participate in the Presidential Youth Fitness Program. The school earned the national award by meeting physical education and physical activity benchmarks as well as engaging families and staff in promoting healthy lifestyles.

Congratulations Red Mill Elementary School, a 2016 Let’s Move Active Schools National Award recipient!
