6A. Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The School Board is pleased to recognize a teacher who last month was named a 2015-2016 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators: Christopher Freeman, AP Environmental Science Teacher from Kellam High School!

This award, which is presented by the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the United States Environmental Agency, was established to recognize the contributions of the nation’s students and teachers who are tackling the world’s biggest environmental challenges with innovative projects. Only up to two teachers from each of the EPA’s 10 regions are selected to receive this award.

At Kellam High School, Mr. Freeman established “Pollen-Nation,” the school's Beekeeping Club, which is the first apiary and bee research site in a Virginia public school. Students manage and maintain a working apiary that further connects Pungo's farming community with the school as well as provides a hands-on educational resource for students to learn about beekeeping, ecosystem management, biodiversity, crop pollination, honey production in farming and more.

He also organized Kellam High School’s 2016 Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Challenge, which gave students the opportunity to present their ideas and solutions to panelists from NASA, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Old Dominion University, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, school division educators and the city’s Department of Planning and Community Development.

It’s no wonder that he was selected for this award and recognized on August 16 during a White House ceremony. Congratulations, Mr. Freeman on receiving this notable national honor!
