School Board Recognitions
January 22, 2013

Special Recognition Announcement

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I'm happy to share some exciting news about a national recognition our division just received. Friday, we learned that VBCPS was named the Best Green School District in the country by the U.S. Green Building Council's Center for Green Schools.

Here to accept a plaque on behalf of the school division and the office of facilities planning and construction is Tim Cole, chief sustainability officer.

Each year, the U.S. Green Building Council puts out an annual "Best of Green Schools" list featuring sustainability efforts at schools across the country. The goal is to recognize schools and districts which are creating healthy and high-performing learning places.

The Center for Green Schools noted that VBCPS has 23 Energy Star Schools and that our current LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) totals more than 1.5 million square feet of building space. Equally remarkable is the fact that while our overall square footage is increasing, our utility costs are actually decreasing.

As you know, we are committed to sustainability efforts through both our building design and the numerous programs in our schools which encourage sustainable practices. I will highlight a few of those efforts in my superintendent's report later tonight.

Please join me in congratulating all students and staff for this national award and in offering special thanks to Mr. Cole for his leadership in our sustainability initiatives.

6. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. VASSP Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of the Year

The School Board is pleased to formally recognize Paula Johnson, Assistant Principal at Landstown High School, for being named the 2013 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.

You will recall that Dr. Merrill announced this honor at our last meeting.

Paula Johnson is a 24-year-veteran of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. In her selection as the Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year, she was cited for her dedication to college readiness, her ability to connect with students and her extensive work with professional learning communities.

In her time with VBCPS, Ms. Johnson has served as an elementary and high school teacher, a school improvement specialist, and of course, an assistant principal.

Ms. Johnson will receive her state award at the annual Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference in June. As the state honoree, she will be considered for national honors as well.

Please join me in congratulating this outstanding administrator!

6B. GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and ASBO Meritorious Budget Award

The School Board is pleased to recognize the Department of Budget and Finance for receiving two prestigious awards: the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association and the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Offices International. Accepting these awards on behalf of the department is Chief Financial Officer Farrell Hanzaker.

The Government Finance Officers Association's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award program recognizes exemplary budget documents by state and local governments as well as public universities and colleges. Each budget document is evaluated using a comprehensive evaluation checklist and those judged to meet the established criteria receive the award.

The Meritorious Budget Award Program, sponsored by the Association of School Business Offices International, rewards school systems for meeting or exceeding a number of rigorous criteria in budget documentation and presentation.

This is the 13th consecutive year that the VBCS Department of Budget and Finance has earned the Meritorious Budget Award and the 14th year they've earned the Distinguished Budget Award.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Hanzaker and his team for receiving these prestigious awards!

Mr. Chairman, this concludes our scheduled recognitions for this evening.
