Community invited to give feedback on
school safety and security

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence and members of the division's newly created Blue Ribbon Panel on School Safety and Security would like to hear from the community on the important topic of school safety.

Students, parents, staff and members of the public are invited to participate in one of two community meetings to be held Tuesday, May 15, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Kellam High School.

Attendees will take part in small group discussions in order to gather feedback around three key questions:

  1. What does the school division do well in providing for school safety and security?
  2. What gaps exist regarding school safety and security that need to be addressed?
  3. What new resources can be added or what existing resources can be used in different ways to strengthen school safety and security?

"We know our schools are safe places; we have people and resources in place to ensure that," said Spence said. "This Blue Ribbon Panel will build upon that strong foundation by bringing together some of the area's top security experts and community leaders to deeply examine our current systems and to recommend ways to improve our practices. Hearing from our community is an important part of that work."

Space at these community meetings is limited. Seating will be reserved for the first 500 registered participants. Online registration is open now. Those who are unable to attend a community meeting are still encouraged to share their thoughts about school safety through an online eTown Hall.

In addition to the community meetings, Blue Ribbon Panel members will visit schools, review plans and speak with staff before making recommendations to the School Board this summer.
