All VBCPS high schools earn
top student council honor

All 11 Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) comprehensive high schools earned the 2018 National Gold Council of Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). This award recognizes student councils for their records of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community.

According to the NASC report, only 18 schools in the commonwealth earned the award this year - with VBCPS earning 11 of the 18.

"We are thrilled to see all of our high schools honored with the Gold Council of Excellence award," said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. "This is a testament to the incredible and passionate student leaders we have here in Virginia Beach as well as to the priority this division places on supporting and developing leadership opportunities for our students."

All 11 VBCPS honorees received the gold level award, which is the higher of two designations given by the NASC. According to the NASC, in order to earn this honor, a school's student council must have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership while meeting a variety of criteria, including participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.

The award announcements this week are especially noteworthy for schools as April 15-21 has been designated as National Student Leadership Week by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
