Anderson elected to serve as School Board chairwoman, Edwards elected vice chairman

For the first time in 19 years, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach has a new chairperson. During its Jan. 10 organizational meeting, the School Board elected Beverly M. Anderson as chairwoman and Daniel D. "Dan" Edwards as vice chairman. Edwards had previously served as chair since 1999.

Anderson was elected to the School Board At-Large seat in November 2012. She served as School Board vice chairwoman for two years. Anderson is a retired 36-year veteran elementary school teacher who served in various roles during her tenure with VBCPS. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Concord University. Anderson's community involvement has included roles as president of the USS Nimitz Officers Wives’ Club; vice president of the Pembroke Elementary PTA; secretary, board member and faculty representative for the Virginia Beach Education Association; board member of Atlantic Soccer Club and board member of the Hampton Roads Sand Soccer Council. Both of her sons graduated from VBCPS.

Edwards was first elected to the School Board as the representative for the Centerville District in 1998. Now in his sixth term, Edwards was reelected in November 2016 to represent the Kempsville District. Professionally, Edwards was the longtime owner of a small manufacturing company in Virginia Beach and previously served in the U.S. Navy for 25 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in education from Northwestern University and a master's in business administration from the College of William and Mary. He has a long history of community service with organizations such as the Virginia Beach Education Foundation, Tidewater College Access Foundation, Virginia Beach Crime Solvers, Virginia Beach Rotary and Tidewater Strider's Running Club. Both of his children graduated from Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS).
