VBCPS to hold 10th Annual
African American Male Summit Jan. 7, 2017

Due to Winter Storm Helena, the African American Male Summit has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will be celebrating a milestone anniversary this January when the African American Male Summit will be held for the 10th year. This annual leadership event was launched in 2007 to commemorate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today through the demonstration of student leadership, community involvement, college-career readiness and relationship building.

This year, the 10th Annual African American Male Summit will be held at Princess Anne High School, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Virginia Beach Deputy City Manager Dr. Kenneth Chandler. According to the city, Chandler has more than 25 years of executive level public sector experience in communities including Arlington County, Portsmouth and Richmond, all in Virginia; Dallas, Texas; and, most recently, the District of Columbia. In his current role, Chandler oversees the Virginia Beach departments of Human Services, Libraries, Parks and Recreation, Human Resources and Public Health as well as the offices of Organizational Development and Volunteer Resources.

Chandler earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College before going on to earn a Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University and a Doctorate of Strategic Leadership from Regent University.

The summit is open to young men in grades eight through 12 across the school division, and will feature teambuilding exercises, leadership sessions and breakout discussions on current topics impacting today’s youth.

As in years past, parents are also invited to attend the summit and take part in the Parent Institute, where they will have their own breakout sessions with topics such as college and career readiness as well as guidance services.

Students interested in attending the summit need to register in their school's guidance office. For more information, contact Dr. LaQuiche Parrott, director of opportunity and achievement, at laquiche.parrott@vbschools.com or by calling 757-263-1088.
