Beach Girls Rock! empowerment series
back for the 2016-2017 school year

The Beach Girls Rock! (BGR) workshop series is back with three events for the 2016-2017 school year. These events are free for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students. Each BGR event is sponsored by the Office of Opportunity and Achievement and will focus on empowerment topics for the division’s young women, including leadership, healthy living and college-career readiness.

“Each year, Beach Girls Rock! workshops have given our students the opportunity to meet and network with their peers and leaders in our community,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “As such, these events have given our students new insight, excitement and perspective into potential educational and career paths.”

In years past, BGR workshops were open to female students in high school. However, this year, each of the BGR workshops will be open to students in grades five through eight. The events will be planned and organized by high school students at each host school.

The first BGR workshop will be held at Bayside High School, Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon. The workshop, which has the theme, “It’s All About Me,” will feature keynote speakers - and twin sisters - Judge Tanya Bullock and Wanda Cooper. Bullock serves on the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. She is one of only four African Americans elected to the bench in the city’s history. Cooper is an attorney with The Cooper Law Firm in Hampton. Both women are graduates of Bayside High School.

After the Nov. 19 event, the following two BGR workshops are also scheduled:

  • Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Kempsville High School
  • Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Cox High School

As always, parents are welcomed to attend each of the BGR events. There will be specific breakout sessions for parents to attend, which highlight various school-related topics and community services.

Students can register for one or all the events at their individual schools. For more information on upcoming events, contact Dr. LaQuiche Parrott, director of opportunity and achievement, at laquiche.parrott@vbschools.com or 757-263-1218.
