October Beach Bags drives bring in largest donations of the year

To support the division’s Beach Bags program, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Parent Connection partnered with Landstown Commons, Pembroke Mall and Max Media to host two food drives in October.

These two drives brought in the largest donations of the year for the Beach Bags program, including 4,456 pounds of food and $3,635 in donations from the community. From the food donated at the drives, volunteers were able to make 575 Beach Bags on site for students in need.

“We are so grateful for our community here in Virginia Beach. Their support of the children in our division is unparalleled,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “I want to thank everyone who took time out of their day to volunteer or donate to the program. These drives are yet another example of how this city embraces every child in need to provide for them - both in and out of the classroom.”

Parent Connection established the Beach Bags program in 2009 to provide meals and healthy snacks to students who may not have enough to eat during weekends and school vacations. More than 55,000 Beach Bags have been distributed since the program’s launch. During the 2015-16 school year, more than 13,000 Beach Bags were provided to students in need.

The Beach Bags program is supported entirely by donations from community members, area businesses and school organizations. Tax-deductible monetary donations can be made through the Virginia Beach Education Foundation and food donations are accepted year-round at the School Administration Building located at 2512 George Mason Drive, Virginia Beach, VA.

For more information about the Beach Bags program, to make a donation or sign up to volunteer, contact the Office of Community Engagement at 757-263-1936 or beachbags@vbschools.com.
