High school academic programs featured at citywide information night Oct. 19

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will host its annual Academy and Advanced Academic Programs Night Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Representatives from the division’s eight high school academy and advanced academic programs will be present to discuss their programs and answer questions. Information will also be available for Green Run Collegiate, the Advanced Technology Center and the Technical and Career Education Center. Current eighth-grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend.

“Providing our students with multiple academic pathways and opportunities for career exploration are critical to preparing them for postsecondary education and employment,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “This citywide event showcases the various programs of study the division offers and, most importantly, lets students hear from other students about their unique learning experiences in fields such as fine arts, entrepreneurship, legal studies, health sciences and technology.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for event attendees to visit exhibits hosted by staff and students from each program and specialty center. Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be breakout sessions for the following academy and advanced academic programs:

The 25-minute sessions will run concurrently and repeat at 6:35 p.m., 7:10 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. to provide students and parents an opportunity to visit four different sessions. A complete schedule with session times and room locations is available online.

In addition to the citywide event Oct. 19, each program hosts an open house for students and families at its home school. The date, time and location for the individual events are available on vbschools.com.

Students must apply for admission to an academy or advanced academic program and be accepted in order to attend. The online application will be available on vbschools.com beginning Oct. 20. Completed applications are due no later than Monday, Jan. 9, 2017.
