School Board extends contract of Superintendent Aaron C. Spence

During its most recent meeting, the School Board voted unanimously to extend the contract of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Dr. Aaron C. Spence through June 30, 2020. The decision comes as Spence begins his third year as head of the 50th largest school division in the nation.

"The Board appreciates Dr. Spence's leadership and his commitment to engaging our students, staff and community in important conversations about public education and school operations in our city," said School Board Chairman Dan Edwards. "We are fortunate that he will continue to serve our students and this division for at least another four years."

The contract extension ensures consistent top-level leadership throughout the implementation of the division's strategic framework, Compass to 2020: Charting the Course, which identifies four goal areas: High academic expectations for all students, the creation of multiple pathways for student success, social-emotional development and a commitment to a culture of growth and excellence for students, staff, parents and the community.

"We are tackling big issues like equity of opportunity, access to rigorous coursework and technology for all students and leveraging those resources to support improved student achievement," said Spence. "It is an exciting time to be an educator in Virginia Beach and I am blessed to work alongside some of the most caring and committed teachers, administrators and staff in the nation as we strive to provide the best learning experiences possible for every child, every day."

This is the second contract extension offered to Spence since he joined the school division in 2014. Neither extension changed his pay nor benefits, which means he will receive the same annual pay raise as every other employee in the school division.
