VBCPS Class of 2016 offered record $76.8 million in scholarships

The Virginia Beach City Public Schools' (VBCPS) Class of 2016 has both earned and accepted the highest amounts of scholarships for any VBCPS graduating class. As reported to high school guidance offices, graduating seniors have been offered $76,885,151 in scholarships and have accepted $49,841,012* to date. Scholarships granted by in-state and out-of-state institutions to students from all 11 VBCPS high schools are represented in the totals.

Scholarship amounts for VBCPS graduating classes have steadily increased each year. The Class of 2012 was offered $43.2 million in scholarships and accepted $32.7 million. The Class of 2014 earned $66.3 million in scholarships and accepted $41.2 million. Totals for the Class of 2016 exceed scholarships offered to last year's graduating class by $6.5 million and exceed accepted amounts by $4.9 million.

"We are thrilled that so many of our seniors will have additional support for their future as granted by higher education institutions, schools, agencies, organizations and foundations," said VBCPS Superintendent Aaron Spence. "Earning more than $76 million in scholarships is a testament to our seniors' excellence in academics, athletics and activities, as well as their commitment to seeking opportunities for financial assistance. There are countless scholarships available each year and we encourage our students and families to continue to take advantage of resources shared by their school guidance offices and beyond."

The school division makes scholarship opportunities and resources readily available to students and families through Scholarship Central. The online, searchable database found on www.vbschools.com lets visitors access scholarship information submitted by school counselors, civic groups, foundations, schools and other organizations. The site is updated throughout the year.
