Askew named principal of Landstown High School

Dr. Cheryl Askew has been named as the new principal of Landstown High School beginning July 1, 2016. Askew, who currently serves as the principal of Ocean Lakes High School, will finish the school year there before transitioning to Landstown over the summer.

"This year, I was reflecting on my career here in Virginia Beach and I knew I was ready for a new challenge as a principal and school leader," Askew said. "When the opportunity came available at Landstown, I knew working with a new, talented staff, a passionate student body as well as the Governor's STEM and Technology Academy would be the ideal fit for me. I will cherish my years at Ocean Lakes but also look forward to the new relationships and work ahead at Landstown."

Askew began her career in education as a teacher in Pennsylvania prior to joining Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS). She has been with this division for 31 years. After 20 years in the classroom, Askew transitioned to administration. She spent three years as an assistant principal at Ocean Lakes before becoming principal in 2005. In the 11 years she has led the school, Ocean Lakes has consistently been one of the strongest schools in the region, including being named a 21st Century Learning Exemplar School by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills as well as awarded a silver medal from U.S. News & World Report, which also ranked Ocean Lakes as the 31st best high school in the state.

"Dr. Askew is one of our division's most tenured principals," said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. "Not only does she instill instructional rigor in her building, she also is a champion of her students, her staff and her school community. I have full faith in Cheryl's abilities to lead Landstown and to build upon the school's strong tradition of excellence."

Landstown High School Acting Principal Jerry Deviney will remain at the school through the end of the school year.
