Changes are coming for school breakfast and lunch operations.
A good breakfast and healthy lunch are essential for growth and student achievement. Well-balanced meals fuel young minds as children are learning throughout the day. Thatís why the school division works diligently to strike a balance between providing a healthy meal for all children without incurring an insurmountable debt from overdrawn lunch accounts.
The Office of Food Services has revised breakfast and lunch service practices to ensure that all children will continue to receive a breakfast or lunch every day. However, students without the cash necessary to buy a daily meal and whose lunch accounts are more than $20.75 overdrawn, will be served a complete bag meal rather than a plated meal.
Bag lunches will include a turkey, ham or chicken and cheese sandwich along with a serving of fruit, a vegetable and milk. Bag breakfasts will include a cheese stick, graham cracker, fruit juice and milk. Bag meals will be placed on the serving line as an option for all children, thereby minimizing the potential stigma of a child having a bag meal.
The school division will make every attempt to notify parents in advance about the need for their child to select the bag meal option. As in the past, a weekly notice will be sent to parents holding negative balances.
Meal account payments can be made at the school cafeteria or online at Parentonline.net. Families with an account which is overdrawn by more than $100 may work with the Office of Food Services to develop a payment plan, if needed. Parents should contact the Office of Food Services by calling 757-263-1101.
