Frequently Asked Questions
First and Fifth Grade Screening for Gifted Services

Why is my child being screened for gifted services?

Pursuant to the school division’s Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted, which is approved by the School Board as recommended by the Community Advisory Committee for Gifted Education, all first-grade and fifth-grade students enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) are screened for possible gifted intellectual program identification.

May I decline having my child screened for gifted services?

Yes, you may decline having your child screened; however, they will not be able to apply for intellectual gifted program services, including application to Old Donation School, for the current school year. In order to decline having your child screened, a parent/guardian must submit the request in writing to: Gifted Education Testing Office, Virginia Beach City Public Schools, 2512 George Mason Drive, Virginia Beach, VA, 23456.

Where does screening take place?

Students are screened for gifted services in their classroom in their neighborhood school.

What should I do to prepare my child for the screening?

A good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast are the only preparation necessary.

What if my child is absent on his/her school’s scheduled screening date?

Testing of students who are absent on the school’s screening date will be rescheduled. The gifted resource teacher (GRT) at the school will notify parents/guardians of the absentee testing dates. Absences will be made up before screening scores are posted to Parent Portal.

Who administers the screening?

Assessment specialists from the school division’s Gifted Education Testing Office administer the screening.

What instrument is used for the screening?

Students will be given the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test.

How do I interpret my student’s test scores?

Scores on the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test are reported as a percentile. It is suggested that students who score at the 90th percentile or higher be referred for further testing if they are not already identified for gifted services. Parents/guardians must complete an online gifted application in order for additional assessment to take place.

What if my child does not score at the 90th percentile or higher?

Parents/guardians, school staff or anyone with knowledge of the child’s abilities may refer him/her for continued assessment even if the child does not score at the 90th percentile or higher. To authorize continued assessment, parents/guardians must complete an online intellectual gifted application.

Who determines if my child is eligible for intellectual gifted services in VBCPS?

All information is reviewed by the VBCPS Gifted Identification and Placement Committee to determine identification for intellectual gifted services.

What information is used to determine if my child is eligible for intellectual gifted services in VBCPS?

Information considered by the Gifted Identification and Placement Committee includes:

  • Online application from parent/guardian
  • Teacher checklist of behavioral characteristics of the gifted indicating a need for gifted services
  • Achievement indicated by proficiency scores and classroom performance
  • Current information from ability tests
  • Information from achievement tests

What if my child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan?

Testing accommodations as noted in the IEP or 504 Plan will be followed for all testing completed by the Gifted Education Testing Office. Please contact the Gifted Education Testing Office at 757-263-6870 if you have questions regarding screening.

How can I access the results of my child’s screening for gifted services?

You can access your child’s screening scores through Parent Portal. Navigate to the Standardized Test Results to view your child’s gifted screening score. Parent Portal accounts should be set up at the beginning of the school year according to the directions found at www.vbschools.com/schoolnet/index.asp. In order to view multiple students’ scores on Parent Portal, you must have a separate account for each child.
