Rebecca A. Gurley

2004 Citywide Teacher of the Year
Region II Teacher of the Year
Rebecca A. Gurley

"I believe that an outstanding teacher helps students to discover their unique talents and abilities and recognize possibilities for the future. An outstanding teacher also teaches students to evaluate themselves and to continuously strive to improve in order to accomplish goals. An outstanding teacher creates a warm and welcoming environment that makes it a pleasure to enter the classroom. Lastly, an outstanding teacher creates the desire for discovery and life-long learning."

"Rebecca Gurley's background and track record in education and her dedication to the students of Lynnhaven and the greater body of students in the division is unmatched. Rebecca is truly an ambassador for public education. Through her classes, she has created numerous partnerships with community members from across the city by allowing students to job-shadow for a day in a field of their choosing. This has helped many community and business leaders see the great things going on in our schools."

Rebecca went on to be named the Region II Teacher of the Year by the State Department of Education. Region II encompasses the following school divisions: Accomack, Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Norfolk, Northampton County, Pequoson, Portsmouth, Southampton County, Suffolk, Williamsburg-James City County and York. Her selection was based on a review of her portfolio highlighting professional accomplishments, educational philosophy and community activities as well as on a personal interview.
